The Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines in conjunction with the Drake Law School and the Drake Legal Clinic partnered with the Internal Revenue Service’s Exempt Organization Division to present the national touring IRS Tax Workshop: For Small and Medium Sized Nonprofit Organizations. This workshop, taught by experienced IRS Exempt Organization Specialists, explained the nuts and bolts of what 501(c)(3) entities must do to keep their tax-exempt status and comply with tax obligations. Throughout this full-day workshop, we learned the benefits and responsibilities of tax-exempt status, unrelated business income, employment classifications and requirements, overview of the 990 form, required disclosures and more.

I have a lot of fun producing DSM Sushi Roll, so I thought I’d apply the same concept to another of life’s indulgences – WINE!

In September, we visited three Central Iowa wineries/vineyards including education, tastings, on-site shopping and vineyard tours.

Our most recent read entitled, “The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace” is co-authored by Gary Chapman who also wrote, “The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts“.
From the Back Cover
Is appreciation communicated regularly at your workplace?
Do you truly feel valued by those with whom you work?
If you express appreciation in ways that aren’t meaningful to your co-workers, they may not feel valued at all. The problem is you’re speaking different languages. In The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace, Dr. Gary Chapman and Dr. Paul White will help you:
o Express genuine appreciation to co-workers and staff – even on a tight budget.
o Increase loyalty with the employees and volunteers in your organization.
o Reduce cynicism and create a more positive work environment.
o Improve your ability to show appreciation for difficult colleagues.
o Individualize your expressions of appreciation by speaking the right language
o Convey the language of physical touch in appropriate ways.
Based on the #1 New York Times bestseller, The 5 Love Languages®, Dr. Chapman and Dr. White give you practical steps to make any workplace environment more encouraging and productive. Before you know it, you will learn to speak and understand the unique languages of appreciation and feel truly valued in return.

Attendees share their 30-second commercial with the group followed by a program.
Today, the East High School Bell Ringers put on a short program. Below are a few photos and videos of their performance:

My roots are VERY German. My ancestors arrived, mostly from what is currently Alsace region of France (which was formerly Germany), just prior to the American Civil War. While I haven’t done extensive genealogical research on my family, oral histories have been passed down through the generations.

Books written about social media tend to become dated as soon as they go to print. I got my hands on the a version of this book that was published in 2009. It felt like I was reading a history book since this field changes so quickly! Luckily, there has been a revised version published in 2012, so I recommend you pick up that copy.
