in Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute

This year I was selected to participate in the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute‘s (GDMLI) Community Leadership Program (CLP). This is a HUGE honor. CLP is Central Iowa’s premier and longest standing leadership program.

For our class project, we are working with Amanda the Panda to renovate their newly-purchased grief center in order to help the organization reach more hurting children and families. The new facility will double Amanda the Panda’s current space to allow for program expansion, provide a fenced outdoor space for activities and create increased community awareness.

We had a small work crew on Saturday, January 26th, as Project Panda continued its forward momentum from the previous work weekend.

The goal: make a hole for the new staircase. Sounds easy, right?

This is a picture on the first floor. We had to map out where to cut the hole, keeping in mind what’s below.

Apparently an entire wall needed to be moved over about a foot to accommodate the new staircase.

This was my first work day and I had visions of sawing wood and hammering nails…nope. That’s what power tools are for!!! Ben’s fixing his table saw so lumber could be cut to frame out the new wall in the basement.

Jacque Mohs and I were VERY proud of the drywall and insulation we removed so a door could be framed out.

Contact Ben Bruns or Dana Kiene if you’re interested in helping out with one of our upcoming work days!
