Rules of Etiquette: RSVP

We all get invited to parties, networking events and Tupperware parties…but do we all RSVP when an RSVP is requested by the organizer? Do you know what RSVP means?

RSVP is a French acronym that means “Respondez S’il Vous Plait” which is translated in English to mean “please respond”. That means, “Yes, I’m coming” or “No, I’m not coming”. By not responding at all, you’re letting the organizer know that you really don’t care about them or their event to indicate whether or not you’re attending.

Did You Remember the Milk?

Since my laptop has been “in the shop” for the past week, I find myself asking these types of questions a lot…and I don’t like it…

I use Microsoft Outlook’s calendar feature as my “task list”. It’s great because I can set recurring tasks; things I need to do daily. All of my tasks pop up in a dialogue box when they’re due; once they’re done, I can “dismiss” them until they’re due again and they reappear. This system was meeting my needs…

Until this past Monday morning…

Book Review: Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely

Predictably Irrational was the third book featured at the Meyvn Group’s Business Book Club this year. They’re taking a break for the summer, but don’t fret; the club will resume in September.

I really enjoyed this book because it overlays behavioral economics on top of theoretical economics (I majored in Economics in college…). We all understand the concept of supply and demand; but behavioral economics is the study of why people DON’T buy more of a product when the price goes down, for example. In a vacuum, theoretical economics works great, but who lives in a vacuum? There are so many factors that influence our decision-making process.

How to Use Facebook as a Fan Page – Updated

by "Get it Done Girl" on November 18, 2013 · 0 comments

in How To:,Social Media

For those of you who are Admins on a Facebook Fan Page – beware…Facebook has changed how to access this functionality.

Last week, this was the process for enabling the feature to use Facebook as a Fan Page:

  • Log in to your personal Facebook Account
  • Click the gear icon in the upper right hand corner
  • Choose the Fan Page that you wanted
  • Viola!

How to currently enable the feature to use Facebook as a Fan Page:

  • Log in to your personal Facebook Account
  • Click the gear icon in the upper right hand corner and choose your Fan Page OR choose from the Pages you’re an Admin of from your personal news feed on the left hand side OR use the search box at the top of the page to search for your Fan Page
  • In the Admin Panel, click on “Edit Page” and choose “Use Facebook as ‘your page name here’”
  • To change back to using Facebook as your personal page, you have to navigate back to the Fan Page, and in the Admin Panel, click on “Edit Page” and choose “Use Facebook as ‘your name’”

The new way to enable this feature doesn’t require more clicks, per se, but the user has to navigate back to the Fan Page in order to toggle back to using Facebook as their personal page. Prior to this change, the user could simply click the gear icon in the upper right hand corner which is available to the user regardless of the page they are on.

How are you adapting to this change in navigation?

Book Review: Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead

by "Get it Done Girl" on November 18, 2013 · 0 comments

in Book Review

I just had to read this book by Sheryl Sandberg to find out what all the hype was about. I would hear my girlfriends using “lean in” in sentences and I wanted to know what they meant…well, now I do!

I had a tough time with this book. The premise is that there are too few women leaders and the author tries to outline ways to improve women’s situation in this area.

Well, what if some women don’t want to be corporate leaders? What if they’re fine doing what they’re doing. They don’t feel suppressed by the male-dominated corporate culture; they’re happy with their job, their home life and the time they can give back to the community. There are plenty of other ways to be leaders than in a corporation. Be a leader in your community, church, school, etc.

If a woman DOES want to be a corporate leader, she will have to make tough decisions because there are only so many hours in a day. The author makes her leadership role at Facebook sound manageable, but we must remember that she has help in the home taking care of her kids, cleaning (probably getting the groceries)…as soon as her kids go to bed, she starts to work again.

I do believe in “leaning in”; I also believe in making sure that when you do lean in, that you stay true to your personal mantra.

Have you read the book? What are your thoughts?

Charitable Auction to Benefit Mike Wasike Family

by "Get it Done Girl" on November 11, 2013 · 0 comments

in Free Agency

I was recently made aware of this community event and wanted to share it with my audience. Please take some time to make yourselves familiar with Mike Wasike’s situation and help if you can:

On Sunday, Nov. 17, a group of Des Moines-area volunteers, led by the 50-person Maple Grove United Methodist Church, will host a charitable auction event to raise money for the Mike Wasike family. All proceeds from the event and all freewill donations will help fund the Wasike family’s medical and living expenses.

Auction-item donations will be accepted until Monday, Nov. 11. Freewill monetary donations will be accepted at the event or any time at teamwasike.org.

Mike Wasike, a legal immigrant from Kenya, was living in Des Moines and working two jobs to make his dream come true for him and his family. Then on a cold and snowy day last February, Mike stopped to offer assistance to three teenagers he thought needed his help. Those same teenagers ruthlessly attacked Mike in a car-jacking attempt. Mike was nearly beaten to death.

Ongoing medical and living expenses have challenged the Wasikes financially and emotionally every day since the attack.

Today, Mike is in a rehabilitation facility in Tulsa, Oklahoma, undergoing intensive therapy. He is more than 400 miles away from his wife, Joan, and children, Sandrah (13) and Melvin (4), who remain in Des Moines. He cannot walk, talk or see. The family believes he can hear, however, because he cried when his wife left to come back to Iowa. His brain is severely bruised, but according to his medical care providers, there is hope that, in time, he can be restored to health and returned to his family and his home.

“People want to help this family because they see how great their struggles are, how mighty their faith is and how much richer our community is for having them here,” said Jim Riordan, president of the Maple Grove United Methodist church council. “We are so excited and so moved to see the outpouring of support from our city.”

The family-friendly event is open to the public, and members of the media are encouraged to attend, as well.
