Last Wednesday, organizers of Christkindlmarket Des Moines met with the City of Des Moines street use team. During the meeting, we received approval to close the streets around Western Gateway Park to produce Christkindlmarket Des Moines in 2016.

This is a project a hand-full of us have been working on for over a year and a half. We could really use the community’s support. There are many ways to be involved. I invite you to sign up via email to be notified when these opportunities become available. We would also love your support on Facebook. Please “Like” Christkindlmarket Des Moines on Facebook.

FinalChristkindlmarketLogo copyIf you are interested in becoming involved with the planning of Christkindlmarket Des Moines, I personally invite you to attend our next event planning meeting at the Downtown Des Moines Central Library on Wednesday, October 14 at 6:45pm in their 2nd floor study rooms. Areas where we could use your leadership include sponsorship, vendors, volunteer coordination, Kinderkorner programming and the beer tent.

Scheduled for the weekend of December 2 – 4, 2016, Christkindlmarket Des Moines is a German-inspired Christmas market whose goal is to educate and entertain the community by exposing them to European-style foods, products and activities. We plan on having regional vendors sell their hand-crafted wares and ethnic foods from traditional wooden stalls, an entertainment area where polka bands, choirs, and bell ringers can perform, a kid’s area where they can participate in various cultural activities and a beer tent offering European-style beverages.

in Book Review,Des Moines,Free Agency,Networking

I don’t think anybody is more excited about this than I am. The Meyvn Group formed the Business Book Club several years ago and I didn’t miss a meeting. The books and discussion that followed helped facilitate my personal and professional development. After a hiatus, this group will reconvene on September 15 for its next discussion:

Who should attend? Curious business professionals – just like you! Each attendee receives an executive book summary and a helpful discussion guide. Best of all, membership is absolutely FREE!

The BBC meets from NOON until 1:00p.

Bring your own lunch and join us for a lively and stimulating discussion on today’s most compelling business topics!

2nd Annual Creativity Summit

Last week I attended the 2nd Annual Creativity Summit.

I attended because I don’t consider myself overly creative and thought I needed help in that area. I think that people who are creative are in the arts (dancing, singing, acting…) or perhaps graphic designers, website designers or architects.

Book Review: Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead

I just had to read this book by Sheryl Sandberg to find out what all the hype was about. I would hear my girlfriends using “lean in” in sentences and I wanted to know what they meant…well, now I do!

I had a tough time with this book. The premise is that there are too few women leaders and the author tries to outline ways to improve women’s situation in this area.

Book Review: Youtility: Why Smart Marketing Is About Help Not Hype

We are living in a time where customers have the most control over their purchase decision-making process. They have more choices, the know more about the products and customer-loyalty can be gained or lost with one transaction.

According to Jay Baer, “Instead of marketing that’s needed by companies, Youtility is marketing that’s wanted by customers. Youtility is massively useful information, provided for free, that creates long-term trust and kinship between your company and your customers.”

Polk County Housing Trust Fund Fall 2013 Community Bus Tour

If these bus tours aren’t on your radar yet, they should be. There’s no better way to learn about our community and the issues it faces than to share a 2-hour bus ride with the people who have their fingers on its pulse.

This bus tour was significantly different than the previous bus tour I participated in. This was the first tour completely outside of Des Moines city limits, but still within Polk County. Most of their bus tours in the past have highlighted issues affecting affordable housing in Des Moines’ urban core. Their goal with this tour was to demonstrate that affordable housing is an issue that affects all communities.

MailChimp Announces New Price Tiers

A few days ago, MailChimp announced new price tiers for their users, virtually creating an option for everyone.

Although MailChimp still offers its FREE option for users maintaining lists of fewer than 2000 email addresses with a limit of 12,000 sends (users can send 6 campaigns to their list of 2000 email addresses which equals 12,000 sends for free), it’s created a LOT more options for users who want to leverage the unlimited send option.

Digital Marketing & Social Media Workshop

Last week, I attended the Digital Marketing & Social Media Marketing Workshop presented by Register Media.

Takeaways:

  • A popular phrase in the digital space is, “Content is King”. A spin on that phrase, “Optimized content is king; conversion is queen.”
  • Consumers now want 10 info spots, not the 4 or 5 info spots that sufficed 10 years ago. Info spot options: customized landing page, website, Facebook, Twitter, Google +, e-newsletter, newspaper advertisement, reviews, deals/offers, QR Code…
  • ZMOT = Zero Moment of Truth…this video says it all…who is helping you with your ZMOT?
