About a month ago I decided to join the Urbandale Chamber. I’d been “dating” chambers for the past three years, trying to decide which one included the types of businesses I work with and my matched well with my own personal brand.

I landed on the Urbandale Chamber because of the two reasons above as well as the fact that they’re extremely active and offer a lot of benefits to its membership. There are so many opportunities to get involved morning, noon and night!

As with all marketing tactics, I’ve developed my strategy to get the most out of my investment:

genYP (monthly) – The Young Professionals group within the Urbandale Chamber. A LOT of their events take place at sporting venues this year. I’m not sure that’s the best situation to make business connections. There are a few professional meetings scheduled which I’ll definitely attend.

Morning Mingle Mixer (monthly) – Strategically connect with attendees at this event from 7:30 a.m.-8:30 a.m. At 8 a.m. a whistle will blow and everyone is to connect with someone they don’t know. Both parties make introductions for 2 minutes before the whistle will blow again. The same format will repeat five times. They force you to talk to people you don’t know!!!

Membership Luncheon (monthly) – I feel that sometimes networking is limited when people take a seat at a table during a breakfast, lunch or dinner networking event, so my strategy with these luncheons is to plan to arrive early and stay late to get the most out of my time there.

AM Exchange (monthly) – From 7:30 – 7:45 a.m. everyone networks. At 7:45 a.m., attendees form a circle. Chamber members introduce themselves and provide a 30-second commercial on their business/service. GREAT way to hear what everybody in the room does and then take a few minutes at the end of the group introductions to focus in on who you want to talk with a bit more and/or schedule a coffee with.

These are just some of the monthly networking opportunities I’m now exposed to. The Urbandale Chamber also offers smaller, more intimate groups for networking and business mentorship that I’m on the wait list for and look forward to being involved with.

Are you a member of a chamber? How are you maximizing your member benefits?

Are You Collecting Testimonials?

People do business with others that they know, like and trust. I’ve been hearing that for the past year; even more so since I started my business in November.

Clients are always hesitant to engage with a new business for the first time. They’re not sure if the business can deliver what they promised; they’re not sure they’re going to get value from the relationship. Testimonials can reassure your prospects that you have a successful track record.

Now, there are great testimonials and then there are not-so-stellar testimonials. You’re asking your client to take time out of their day to write something for you, so you should make the process as easy as possible.

Training For The Hy-Vee Triathlon Has Taught Me…

  • When you think you can’t run anymore, walk for 30 seconds and then continue – it’s the only way you’re going to get stronger. There are some days when I struggle with getting all of my client work done – but I must. Taking short breaks really re-energizes my body and mind so I can push through.
  • Nutrition is important. You can train longer and be a better employee when you nourish your body correctly. After mile 3, I need water; if I don’t drink any, I’m not going to be able to make it to the finish. If you skip lunch, you know the consequences!

10 Ways to Cleanly Skin a Cat

This post isn’t really about different ways to skin a cat without getting your hands dirty – what it IS about is virality.

A post with this title could be a metaphor for the approach you take to professionally dealing with a difficult client. It could also be a metaphor for diffusing a sticky situation with a group of volunteers. Whatever the REAL storyline is, you’re going to get more clicks if you use a stickier title

Shout Out to My Mentors

Whether they know it or not, there are a few people who have come out of the woodwork over the past year to mentor me both during my job search and in my career transition.avatar5_bigger

I met Ben Stone during the summer of 2009 when I was deep in the grips of being unemployed. Ben is a “recovering HR recruiter” who has helped me with technical issues and offered up website development tips and tricks. He also gives back to the community on a continuous basis.

What your Twitter Account Stats Really Say

Many people brag about how many Twitter Followers they have. The more Followers you have, the better, right? I say – WRONG! The same goes for those you are Following.

I manage a few Twitter accounts and every month I use Manage Twitter to “unfollow” Twitter Followers who haven’t posted an update in over a month. To me, this is an indication that they aren’t using Twitter anymore. If they’re not engaging with the community, I don’t want to have them be part of my statistics. This allows me to follow additional people without disrupting my Followers/Following ratio too much.

I almost fell off the Blogwagon!

When I started this blog for my business, my goal was to write one original post a week (inspired by The Brand Chef who has written, on average, one post/week for around 7 years) and then possibly graduate to two over time and then possibly three. I’m finally sitting down to write my weekly post and it’s “after hours” on a Friday night! How did this happen?

I have a reminder set up in Outlook to pop up on Sundays which gets me thinking about writing my post for the week. I don’t “dismiss” the reminder until it’s done. For some reason, this week, there were other things that needed to get done before blogging. This is a clear message that I need to SCHEDULE an hour each week to blog because it is THAT IMPORTANT.

My First GDMLI Work Day

by "Get it Done Girl" on January 29, 2013 · 0 comments

in Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute

This year I was selected to participate in the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute‘s (GDMLI) Community Leadership Program (CLP). This is a HUGE honor. CLP is Central Iowa’s premier and longest standing leadership program.

For our class project, we are working with Amanda the Panda to renovate their newly-purchased grief center in order to help the organization reach more hurting children and families. The new facility will double Amanda the Panda’s current space to allow for program expansion, provide a fenced outdoor space for activities and create increased community awareness.

We had a small work crew on Saturday, January 26th, as Project Panda continued its forward momentum from the previous work weekend.

The goal: make a hole for the new staircase. Sounds easy, right?

This is a picture on the first floor. We had to map out where to cut the hole, keeping in mind what’s below.

Apparently an entire wall needed to be moved over about a foot to accommodate the new staircase.

This was my first work day and I had visions of sawing wood and hammering nails…nope. That’s what power tools are for!!! Ben’s fixing his table saw so lumber could be cut to frame out the new wall in the basement.

Jacque Mohs and I were VERY proud of the drywall and insulation we removed so a door could be framed out.

Contact Ben Bruns or Dana Kiene if you’re interested in helping out with one of our upcoming work days!

Serving with Joppa

by "Get it Done Girl" on January 22, 2013 · 0 comments

in Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute

My Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute (GDMLI) small group had the opportunity to serve with Joppa a few months ago.

What Joppa does:

  • Express Christ’s unconditional love
  • Build relationships & visit often
  • Help people stay warm, dry and healthy
  • Provide food, supplies & care
  • Respond to needs & emergencies
  • Be a voice, advocate & link to resources
  • Encourage positive steps forward
  • Provide aftercare once off the streets

I was made aware of this group through Larry Wieland of Ace Body & Motor who volunteers every Sunday with the organization. He primarily chops wood and brings it around to all of the homeless camps. And boy, are there a lot of them in Des Moines.

I didn’t know that homelessness was so prevalent in Des Moines. You can bet, that under just about every bridge and wooded area in the city, there is a homeless camp. Some individuals want to live this lifestyle, others fell victim to it.

Our service that day consisted of meeting Rick, the main coordinator, visiting two camps and just chatting with the homeless. Some were high, others were down to earth and very personable. Some had plans to leave Des Moines. Another was getting her degree online at the downtown library…

On the day we served, we were out in the field visiting a camp with our coordinator and a newly homeless man was being dropped off. This was going to be his first night sleeping out in the elements. Could you imagine? How would you react? It could happen to any of us…
