Thank you to the Urbandale Chamber of Commerce for allowing me to speak on LinkedIn during your May Membership Luncheon at Felix & Oscar’s. Below are the tips I shared with the group:
Settings – the first thing I always do when I’m working with a Client! A couple of things:
- Profile Privacy: Edit your public profile – make sure you’re showing the public what you want to show them!
- Profile Privacy: Sharing profile edits – you want this on
- Data privacy and advertising: turn off data sharing with third parties and advertising preferences
- Communications: go through Basics and Groups and make sure you’re receiving the communications you want
- Communications: LinkedIn messages – turn off participate in research and Partner InMail
Include a professional head shot
Add a branded background photo
Include keywords in the professional headline
Contact Info – make sure this is complete
Customize your public profile link – add to email signature and printed materials so people can connect directly to you without difficulties
Go through all of the “Sections” to see what applies to you
Include your email and phone number in the “Additional Info” section and move to the top of your profile
Background/Experience – Add Company Profile Page and add media
Click and drag pieces of current experience in order of importance versus chronological
Add Skills – make sure they’re accurate and ON
Ask for Recommendations and recommend others
Add Connections: Use the Search Box at the top of the page, Use “People You May Know” at top of home page
Share an individual’s profile with a Connection
Update your status once/week up to daily – position yourself as the expert!
- Share industry articles, your blog posts, community events, speaking engagements…
Read your news feed – Read what your Connections are sharing, Like, Comment and/or Share
Become a member of LinkedIn Groups and begin engaging
- Use the Search Box at the top of the page
- Search for Groups based on geography or industry
- Lurk, engage with posts and/or facilitate discussions
Look for Jobs – Set up queries and save, Have results sent to an email address
Follow companies – Use the Search Box at the top of the page and follow competitors, prospects, friends of your business, etc.
Using the LinkedIn long-form blogging platform is great for personal branding. You can share your post with a potential 400+ million people. Also, your connections receive a notification when you’ve published new content. Use “Who’s Viewed My Posts” to follow-up with those individuals.

Celebrate Waukee 2015 – A Huge Success!
Last December, I was hired by the City of Waukee as an Event Consultant.
The Waukee Leadership Institute‘s Class of 2015 was tasked with revamping Waukee’s Annual Fall Festival and they needed some guidance.
Renamed “Celebrate Waukee”, this family-friendly event was held on June 5 – 6, 2015, in the Historic Downtown Triangle and Centennial Park.

Christkindlmarket Des Moines Receives City Approval
Last Wednesday, organizers of Christkindlmarket Des Moines met with the City of Des Moines street use team. During the meeting, we received approval to close the streets around Western Gateway Park to produce Christkindlmarket Des Moines in 2016.
This is a project a hand-full of us have been working on for over a year and a half. We could really use the community’s support. There are many ways to be involved. 2015 Mid-America Conference on Fundraising
The 30th annual Mid-America Conference on Fundraising took place earlier this week at the Des Moines Downtown Marriott. I supported the conference planning committee with digital communications, financial management, on-line registration and on-site registration.

Forty Under 40 Recognition Dinner

2015 Iowa Governor’s Conference on Public Health
Last week was the culmination of several months of preparation and hard work by many people.
As conference coordinator of the 2015 Iowa Governor’s Conference on Public Health, I worked with a conference planning committee comprised of public health officials across this great state to produce an event attended by 550 individuals enjoying 49 academic concurrent sessions.
This is the largest conference I’ve ever co-produced. The magnitude of communication, logistics, decisions-making and fun made for an exceptional experience. If you need help planning your next conference (or know someone who does!) just drop me a note.

While participating in the 2013 Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute Community Leadership Program, our sub-group, the “Green Co-Hort” formed a strong bond. We continue to meet regularly to socialize and to volunteer in our community.
