DSM Sushi Roll

Last year, my sister-in-law and I decided to rent a party bus to take us to five different sushi restaurants in Des Moines. It was a small group of us since we wanted to know everyone on the bus and keep it to just friends. It turned out to be a GREAT time!

This year, I’ve brought the event under my business in order to build out the digital marketing collateral and give this event some street cred. The website and Facebook Fan page have grown over the last several months as has the e-newsletter

Spring 2013 Community Bus Tour

Last Fall, I went on the Polk County Housing Trust Fund’s (PCHTF) bus tour through Des Moines’ Urban Core and it completely opened my eyes to the housing challenges of our community. Even though I live in Pleasant Hill (aka, The Upper East Side), what happens in Des Moines’ Urban Core affects all of us that live nearby.

The Polk County Housing Trust Fund organizes three bus tours per year and they’re different every time. April 2013’s bus tour took place during Affordable Housing Week and was sponsored by DART. PCHTF and DART’s mission is to help educate community leaders about the relationship between quality public transit and affordable housing.

Feedly: My new Google Reader

In case this earth-shattering news hasn’t landed on your doorstep yet, as of July 1, 2013, Google will be shutting down their product called the Google Reader.

For those unfamiliar, Google Reader is an aggregator of RSS feeds. RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication,” and by using a feed aggregator you can view every post made on a website without going to the actual website itself. In this way, users can follow the updates of hundreds of sites at once.

It’s how I read the Internet.

A few months ago, I was selected to the 2015 class of Forty under 40. It means so much to be recognized for my efforts over the past six years in the Des Moines community. A few weeks ago, myself and my fellow honorees were recognized at a dinner hosted at the Sheraton West Des Moines Hotel. Below are a few photos from the evening:

Over the past few months, I’ve had the distinct pleasure of working with WesleyLife and Lifespace Communities, in partnership with LeadingAge Iowa, to produce the Iowa Premiere of “Glen Campbell…I’ll Be Me”.

WesleyLife and Lifespace Communities support the independence, health and well-being of older adults wherever they call home. These organizations want to bring awareness to Alzheimer’s Disease and this movie couldn’t have done it better. This documentary chronicles country-music legend Glen Campbell’s struggle with Alzheimer’s disease as he embarks on his farewell tour in the U.S., Australia, and Europe.

The movie premiere event included a VIP reception at Des Moines Golf & Country Club and the film screening at Lutheran Church of Hope. After the movie, James Keach, the director of the film, facilitated a panel discussion with Kim Campbell (wife), Shannon Campbell (son) and Ashley Campbell (daughter). A highlight of the evening was the four-song concert performed by Ashley and Shannon which included both original works and familiar crowd favorites. It’s certainly comforting to know that Glen Campbell’s music will continue.

My role: event planner, volunteer coordinator, day-of event manager, on-site media point of contact, talent handler and schlepper

Should you wish to see this film, it will be screened at the Fleur Cinema in March.

About the Film

In 2011, music legend Glen Campbell set out on an unprecedented tour across America. They thought it would last 5 weeks instead it went for 151 spectacular sold out shows over a triumphant year and a half across America.

What made this tour extraordinary was that Glen had recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. He was told to hang up his guitar and prepare for the inevitable. Instead, Glen and his wife went public with his diagnosis and announced that he and his family would set out on a “Goodbye Tour.”

The film documents this amazing journey as he and his family attempt to navigate the wildly unpredictable nature of Glen’s progressing disease using love, laughter and music as their medicine of choice.

Special appearances include Bruce Springsteen, The Edge, Paul McCartney, Blake Shelton, Sheryl Crow, Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, Taylor Swift, Steve Martin, Chad Smith and Bill Clinton among many others.

My First GDMLI Work Day

This year I was selected to participate in the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute‘s (GDMLI) Community Leadership Program (CLP). This is a HUGE honor. CLP is Central Iowa’s premier and longest standing leadership program.

For our class project, we are working with Amanda the Panda to renovate their newly-purchased grief center in order to help the organization reach more hurting children and families. The new facility will double Amanda the Panda’s current space to allow for program expansion, provide a fenced outdoor space for activities and create increased community awareness.

We had a small work crew on Saturday, January 26th, as Project Panda continued its forward momentum from the previous work weekend.

The goal: make a hole for the new staircase. Sounds easy, right?

My Urbandale Chamber Membership Maximizing Strategy

About a month ago I decided to join the Urbandale Chamber. I’d been “dating” chambers for the past three years, trying to decide which one included the types of businesses I work with and my matched well with my own personal brand.

I landed on the Urbandale Chamber because of the two reasons above as well as the fact that they’re extremely active and offer a lot of benefits to its membership. There are so many opportunities to get involved morning, noon and night!

As with all marketing tactics, I’ve developed my strategy to get the most out of my investment:
